National Travel Surveys seminar
Call for Papers for the National Travel Surveys seminar at ETC 2017
Data and data collection is a recurrent topic at ETC. During the last years many papers on Big Data have been presented and discussed. However, the more traditional household / personal travel diary surveys (or National Travel Surveys – NTS) have had little attention at ETC over the last years. ETC 2016 has had a strong stream on travel surveys. It was acknowledged that traditional travel surveys still serve as the ‘backbone’ of many models, and source of overall insight in mobility at regional / national level. It is to be expected that traditional surveys will continue to be an important source of information and explanation of (developments) in travel behaviour.
The 2016 travel survey stream identified the challenge of bridging the gap between the abundant and relatively cheap big data that generally has poor behavioural explanatory value, and the more scarce and generally expensive travel survey data that contains rich behavioural explanatory information. Also challenges remain to successful implementation of new data collection techniques in real life (national) travel surveys.
For 2017 contributions are invited that cover innovations in the use and design of NTS, and that search for combinations with new sources like Big data and innovative data collection methods.
