This study's principal aim was to determine the extent to which pollutant emissions from engines running on conventional (petrol and diesel) and alternative fuels (compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and reformulations) could be reduced by remote control of the engine management system. This study assesses the relative impacts that the following measures could have on pollutant concentrations in central urban locations:
* retuning vehicle engines;
* changing vehicle operating modes;
* ensuring the early detection of excessive emissions; and
* utilising alternative fuels.
In addition, the technological and communication requirements for the implementation of certain measures are considered.
